The first homes were built in Kendall-Whittier before statehood. Tulsa's first "suburban" shopping center was built here. Development continued until the late 1940s or early 1950s.

The population aged. A highway that was built through the center of the commercial district. Tulsa suffered the effects of white flight after schoool desegregation. KW entered a period of decline.
